You might think January is a quiet month on a flower farm and in a way it is…especially located in the mountains, where our nights are a little cooler and a snow flurry isn’t totally out of the question.
Much of our work is indoors, even behind a screen. We spend January brainstorming what we might offer in the coming warm season. We order seeds, bulbs, and corms. We lean heavily into forging new client relationships for the upcoming year.
However, you’ll still find us in the field on a weekly basis. Many of our spring flowers are tucked into the soil in the very middle of winter, where they are generally dormant until the weather warms and the days lengthen. Any bed preparation we can do before the South Carolina summer temps arrive is done. In our opinion, winter farming is the best! No gnats, no heat, no surprise snakes!
We put everything shown below (and more) in the ground just this month. It was a whirlwind there for a minute, but everything is settling in nicely :)
Really, we are counting down the days until these flowers show their colorful faces. They are the first to bring the Spring feels to our farm and are used in our Spring CSA bouquet shares. Every season, we hear stories from customers about how much they enjoyed bringing color and life into their home while the trees outside were still working to get their green on.
The photos shown here are of the flowers grown last season and used in the shares…you can see why we just can’t wait until harvest time comes!
